Maybe some sort of United Nations thing to get rid of these aweful weapons that could kill so many people. Every sane person knows that to use them is madness, so why have them sitting around?

What's this 'the world' thing? There's no political entity 'the world' and the UN is a farce, a joke, a corrupt tea-sipping debate society.
Remember, the UN spent 10 years doing weapons inspections in just one country, Iraq, and still failed to find them all or force any kind of compliance. And was only able to minimally force some compliance through threat of force from the US.
And you think they could run an even bigger program like this?

Because not everyone will participate in such a "deal." Some country some where will hide a nuke and then what would we have to defend ourselves with?
Look at N Korea... they wont give up their weapons, they have lied to us numerous times - countries like those would keep their weapons.. and only the good guys would be willing to do such a thing.
Just like the ban on guns, look - the good guys want to register their guns, the bad guys steel their guns and hide them.

because the bad guys would use the money to buy newer technology.
