Its not part of any continent. It is sometimes lumped in with other Pacific islands (and Australia) as "Oceania" for administrative purposes (for example, FIFA uses the term Oceania to group the football teams from the region into World Cup qualifying groups), but Oceania is not a continent.

Oceania (sometime know as "Australia Continent") is a geopolitical region, rather than a geographical continent, consisting of many countries in the South Pacific Ocean, including the continent of Australia, New Zealnd, and the Pacific Islands...

New Zealand is officially in Oceania and not a part of the Australian continent as it's over a 1000 miles from Australia. The islands that form New Zealand lies on the boundary of the Australian tectonic plate and the Pacific plate, so it's more like part of an oceanic mountain range than a continental structure.

Culturally they are similar, but that's about the extent of it.

New Zealand is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean consisting of two large islands (the North Island and South Island) and many smaller ones. Since it is an island it is not part of Australia. New Zealand and Australia are separated by the Tasman Sea. It is about 2000 miles across.

Theoretically, it's not on a continent. Since New Zealand is formed by 2 islands, it is considered that it belongs to Oceania (all the land from the ocean). But it is often considered to belong to Australia, because they are located on the same tectonic plate.
