We are buying new construction housing and moving in September. I've heard that the soil that comes with the development is not very good. What steps should I take in order to establish a new lawn that is relatively lush, weed-free, and green? I am considering trucking in new soil - but having never been a homeowner before, I don't have a clue where to start.

I use these two websites for most of my gardening needs:

Both will provide the information you seek.

Good luck with your new home.

This varies so much depending on where you live, but September is a difficult time to start a lawn in most parts of the country. The easiest--and most expensive--option would be to truck in new topsoil and lay down sod. The rolls of sod will choke out most weeds, and you have instant lawn. If you live in an area where winter sets in early, however, your expensive new lawn may not have time to root properly before the cold kills much of it. Speak with local nurseries about this.

Another option to bringing in topsoil: compost. New construction often has badly compacted soil. If the soil is also poor--lacking organic material, or too sandy, or too much clay--adding compost and tilling it in will both break up the soil and create a much healthier home for your lawn. You can rent a tiller and do it yourself, or have it tilled.

hi
if the soil is not good you will have to truck in loam.a layer 4-6 inches deep should be good.roll out sod is the best way to go but can be expensive.the next best thing is hydroseed.this is sprayed on from a truck and contains every thing needed for a great lawn.it includes a variety of seed, nutrients, and mulch.a local landscaping company will be able to help with that.the best time to plant a lawn is in the spring or fall.remember that this is also a great time tomake all your flower beds.good luck
