I am going to be 39 weeks 1 day pregnant at my next appointment and that is 20 day later than my last. I am not getting seen every week and am very concerned about this. Granted I am having a healthy pregnancy I am a first time mother and get very worried still. How do they know he will continue to stay healthy? That my amniotic fluid in the sake has not depleted or his heart rate has slowed. I have heard some awful stories of problems unknown till the last weeks of your pregnancy. I called numerous times complaining I want to be seen sooner and they refuse to see me before my next appointment even though I offered to come in on the drop of a dime if there was a cancellation. I just want peace of mind and they said I will not been seen weekly till after my 40th week. What should I do???

This is a hard one. It sounds like you just choose the wrong practice. If I were you I would find my local midwives office and make an appointment. It is very hard to switch caretakers at this point but it doesn't sound like your doctor is taking very good care of you. They should always have appointments open for you especially this late in the pregnancy. Whats going to happen when you go in to labor and your doctor is fully booked for the day? I wouldn't put up with it.

I have never heard of that. I've always been seen like every 4 weeks until I was like 30 weeks then every 2 weeks like 2 times then once a week in the final stretch. Maybe your dr is doing things different. I don't think that I'd like it either. Are you sure it's not your insurance doing all of this. I would check into it and maybe call another obgyn. The other obgyn may not take you since your already 38 weeks but I would try. Call your family physican too! Good Luck to you.

Lil Gabby and Jacob's Mommy are right. Talk to your OBGYN or get a second opinion.

Pregnancies usually last 39 weeks, 40 weeks is one week overdue

Have you read What to Expect when you're Expecting?

Your peace of mind and your health come first, ask the doc why you will not be seen sooner or more frequently? In my case I don't take no for an answer, I do need explaining, a lot of it.

Why dont you bypass the 'secretary' at the office and ask to speak directly to the doctor....I assume that there is more than one in the practice?

If you dont get what you want----let your fingers do the walking and call a few other OBGYN's and see if they will take over your case. Even in a normal preganancy, this late in the game you should be seen every week---even if it is 'just' for your peace of mind! Remember (if you are in the USA) that you are hiring this doctor to perform a JOB----YOU are the one in charge of your medical care, not them. They are only there because you HIRE them to be.....if they do not want to do the job up to your specifications and what is considered normal pregnancy protocol....take your buisness elsewhere----just like you would a restaurante or any other business!

I was seen 1x per month until I was 32 weeks. Then it was every 2 weeks until I was 36 weeks, and then once a week until delivery. You should be seen every week at this point.

I would consider seeing a new Dr. I would ask your regular Dr. (NOT the OBGYN, your regular family Dr.) if they have any suggestions of who to see. Call the new Dr. and tell them the situation and ask if they can see you now until you deliver. If you don't feel like you're getting good enough care, (which would be true) you need to do something about it now.

Good luck!!

My friend is 36 weeks pregnant at the moment and she has the same concerns and this is her second child. I can't believe how it's changed. Here in the UK you were seen every 4 weeks until you were 30 weeks then every 2 until 36 weeks then every week til the birth. Now its every 4 weeks till the end that is worrying. I share your concerns but i don't what you can do maybes just keep asking and phoning midwife

Well, they should already be seeing you every week at about 36 weeks, but I'm sure your baby will be fine. If you still feel him moving around, and your not having contractions- I'm sure you'll have a healthy baby- don't worry. Though you are paying for the visits (or co-pay) you should have a say in when you get seen, so sorry about that, but don't worry.

I would find a different doctor!! You should definitely be seen every week in the last 6 weeks of your pregnancy!! Something doesn't sound right there!!

At this point there's really nothing to do. YOu can't find another Dr. this far along. After your pregnenct you know not to go back to the same Dr. and you really should complain to some sort of ethics board if there is sucha a thing.

your doctor may be over booked right now. he could have a lot of patients if your healthy and the baby is healthy i wouldnt worry to much . although i agree you should be seen weekly now. you could be dilating and not feel the contractions yet. good luck why not just go in and speck to your doctornot the receptionist
