Get into the New Testament and read The Letter of Paul to the Roman church, chapter 7 and verse 16. It may surprise to you to realize that Paul had the very same problem you are describing.
If you've not read the Bible before you might find the rest of his argument on the subject difficult, but basically his answer is in Chapter 8, verses 1 through 11.
Now I realize a lot of people think Christianity is a bunch of bunk. But I do urge you to read these verses, and then spend 21 days reading through the gospel of John. Just a little a day, and ask God to reveal Himself to you. If it is bunk, it won't hurt you. And if it isn't you may find the help you need. A Christian friend or pastor might be willing to talk about these thing with you as you work through them.
It is evident to me from you questions, that you are in earnest about wanting to live a life of more integrity, and that though your behavior, as you say, may be shallow, your thinking isn't.

I wait until the dumb bastards sit down and THEN jump up myself. I also like to scream really loud when I do this for maximum effect. No one tells me what to do.
