Let's be honest, France reached the final on the back of retiring players like Zidane and Thuram. Minus Zidane, they never make it to the final, and now he's retired, so they can't be ranked up there.

Italy are the best now, Germany beat Argentina and were completely even with Italy for 120 minutes in the best game of the tournament which could have gone either way. Then they hammered Portugal 3-1 in a game that was never in doubt. And they have every player returning save Kahn, who wasn't a starter anyways. Argentina are a close third, and Portugal gets 4th because they have reached the semi-finals of two straight major tournaments. Brazil back in 5th, they showed they're no longer miles ahead of the world but actually quite even with them now.

players-wise, you can't just say best player in the world. positionally, i say it's

keepers: Buffon and Lehmann

defenders: Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Ricardo Carvalho and Lahm.

midfielders: Riquelme, Ballack, Gerrard, Kaka

strikers: Klose and Crespo

and the best young player in the world is Podolski.

The World Cup hardly answered this question, which is what the competition should have done. Too many games were settled on penalties etc.

I wouldn't argue with Brazil, Italy and Argentina as the three best, but after that there is not much to choose amongst a number of teams.

Judging from the 2006 World Cup I personally do not think we are living in a great era for world football. One reason is precisely that there is a lack of outstanding players like Pele.

1 Italy, but they are not gonna have many of their key players next World Cup but Euro 2008 they wil hopefully be there.

2 Brazil, they are gonna have to make it without Ronaldo, not gonna be their next WC.

3 Portugal C.R. awesome striker

4 France Henry is staying and Trezegchuet hopefully

5 England they got some real talent if they can do something with it
