Get Verizon's FiOS. It's fiber optic, so that's the speed of light - you can't get much faster than that. And, it's cheaper than cable Internet. Availability is still limited, but if you can get it I highly recommend it. They will soon start offering cable TV as well, at 50% savings from the cable companies.

You can only get what is offered around you. Both DSL and cable have their pro's and con's. I prefer cable, I think it's faster and that's what I use but if I couldn't get that then I would get DSL.

I am pro cable too.
Besides faster in most cases, its safer!
There are viruses that take your dial-up system and re-route it to other countries and then to your browser and you get charged the long distance fee and you don't find that out till your phone bill comes in and it says you owe $200, $500 or even $3000 or more. With cable there is no dial-up.

I find optimum online has the best speeds I've ever seen. I've downloaded at over 1MB/sec. That's mega BYTE not mega bit. They are super duper fast but you can only get that if cablevision is the provider in your area.
