why is a jeans called a pair of jeans when it is just single in quantity ?

Good question, if a pair of jeans is called this b/c it has a place for 2 leg holes, then why is it not a pair of shirts? I mean shirts has a place for two arm holes, right?

Sometimes people refer to them as a jean. I guess they are using the right termanology because "jeans" doesn't exactly make sense (as you pointed out!). Take the word drag. Most of us say.... "She drug the bag across the floor." When the correct way is.... "She dragged the bag across the floor."

I know! Its a shocker! But I learned it in english last year. Anyways, I am just giving an example on how the things we say aren't exactly correct because we get lazy, or we learn them the wrong ways. So by referring to a jean as a "pair of jeans" might just be a habit we picked up somewhere along the line.. just like drug. =)

I guess because the word ends in an "s." Pair of jeans, pair of pants, pair of shorts, but not a pair of bras, even though the bra is taking care of two, um, things, just like pants are covering two legs.

its just the word "Jeans". It ends with an "S", so everybody thought it is a plural.
Also the right english term is " a pair of trousers". So it is a pair of jeans trousers.

I don't know, but if you ask any fashion guru, they refer to pants as "a nice pant" and "the perfect jean". They don't pluralize the noun. I think this is the proper pronunciation, but I think that jeans and pants are just another american coloquialism.
