They are usually much better at avoiding questions or, perhaps, giving qualified answers, so that they can't be pinned down. Haven't you noticed, that they all seem to use the same kind of language. I can nearly always detect labour politicians from their style of dress and the stereotypical type of language they use.
They will lie if they think that they can get away with it, but they are more likely to be devious. I think that we, the voting public, are largely responsible, because we can't take the truth and the medicine that follows. They always say that you get the type of Government and politician that you deserve. And to all those who voted this lot in, particularly a second time; you aren't very bright or you are not patriotic. For some voters, as long as it has "labour or socialist in its title, they will vote for it. Even when it is obvious that it is not a traditional labour Government but a radical/revolutionary party.

Politicians cannot be successful unless they get on within their political parties. And at Westminster in particular they cannot get on unless they vote for things they disagree with. The Whips, the cliques of MPs within each party who exert public discipline, exert pressures on backbenchers in outrageous ways that would never be acceptable in ordinary employment.
Politicans like to be popular and some of them are tempted to say what people want to hear in the short-term when they know they will eventually need to do something else. And nobody like's a liar once he has been exposed.
Perhaps politicians are in an impossible situation. They cannot suceed unless they lie and if they lie they cannot be successful.
I beleive in honesty. But then when I belonged to a political party I never won a public election.

Yes, Politicians don't have to tell the truth. You have to take five minutes out of you life and find out the truth and hold them to the fire when they lie. That's how you keep them honest.

They don't have to lie to remain in power. They just shy away from telling the truth when it is not necessary for them to do so.

Its not that they have to lie, but they have to play all sides. They need to schmooze people to stay on everyones good side and therefore stay in power. They probably make false promised to do this.
