I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Hi there,

Simply put, I would avoid Norton and possibly even McAfee. They have amassed a huge reputation, yet their products are falling by the wayside over the last 2 years or so. Many malicious files are now getting through their defences.

Everyone also seems to rate AVG, Lavasot and Spybot highly - although I have a feeling this purely based on the fact they are free, AND NOT because of their protection skills (if you perform some quick research on security vendors and blocking of malware you will find all these score pretty much the lowest of all).

One Security suite I have been increasingly impressed with of late and would strongly recommend at least trialing, is a relatively new program called Prevx1 (also a UK company - based in Derby). This is continuing to prove that they detect, protect and remove more malware (virii, spyware, adware, trojans, etc) than all other leading security vendors.

It also works in a completely new way to all other security programs. Instead of catching a virus, creating a fix (or signature) and then making that available for their userbase to download as an update - Prevx1 works in real-time. This means that if a new piece of malware is detected - a fix is created automatically and the entire userbase of Prevx1 users are then protected instantly - no need for downloads. Pretty cool in my opinion.

Lastly, Prevx1 is an All-in-one solution, meaning you no longer need 3 or 4 separate programs installed on your machine (which can also conflict and slow your PC down) to deal with each type of threat.

You can read more information about Prevx1 and/or download a Free Trial here:

Ok - the first thing you have to do is stop the viruses from working. Go to Start and run msconfig. Deselect everything in your Services and Startup tabs - reboot your PC.

If you Internet won't start, run msconfig again and look for the programs that are involved - the Microsoft links should be ok.
If you have to restart your PC.

Once you're on the net, go to Limewire.com and download Norton anti Virus - follow the instructions in the .txt file to get it registered. You won't be able to have your modem connected while installing Norton and after its installed, you'll have to restart your PC. Still keep your modem disconnected.

Do a full system scan and restart - Norton will want to do another full system scan - let this go through. After its finished, run msconfig again and select everything in your Services and Startup tabs. - Don't restart your PC

Go into Control Pan and Add/Remove programs and uninstall your present anti virus programs, if any as well as any Toolbars you may have download to stop the viruses. Some of these Toolbars and anti spyware programs put a virus into your PC to coerce you into buying their programs. Adaware is the worst.

After this, you can reconnect your modem and restart your PC - it will be safe and free of virues.

Have fun computing.

what you need to do to is download spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org/,and install this, make sure you update it and imunize it aswell(this will protect you from future attacks)
i run this software every night and it keeps my p.c pretty near spyware free
i also run adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,this is a adware scanner and runs well with spybot to create a good allround security package
another good anti-spyware program(free) is spyware -blaster,allthough this is just a detterent and not a cleaner so it should be used with at least one of the above
yahoo anti-spy should not be used as a front line scanner, its not very good at detection, but it wont harm you to keep it running
all of the above software is free of charge
good luck

Go to www.download.com. Then find Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy. Both of those are free, good spyware removal tools.

I researched this stopzilla.
Click on this link and look at the bottom of the page.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002T46TU/103-4721718-4931807?v=glance&n=229534

I would imagine that it gives an exaggerated report.
I would trust yahoo anti-spyware for a more accurate review.
