I have had spotting off and on for a couple of months now. I saw the doctor and was told that this happens with an iud, I have had it for about 3 years with no problem until now. WHy does an iud make you spot? Has anyone else had this happen after having the iud FOR A WHILE?

the better suggestion is you please contact a Doctor.

I've had a Mirena IUD for a little more than a year and a half now, and I had my first round with spotting a couple of months ago. My doctor explained that although you don't usually have your period, you still ovulate, and your uterine lining still thickens in response to the hormones released during ovulation. Without a period to flush out the lining, it builds up, and after a while has to go somewhere - which is the spotting. I think how long it takes before that happens, how often it happens, and how much spotting you experience at the time are just a result of your individual body chemistry - one person's lining may thicken more than another's during ovulation, and may retain that excess tissue more or longer than another's. I'm not a doctor by any stretch, I'm just going by what my OB-GYN told me a couple of months ago - I was pretty freaked out, too, because of my endometriosis, so I understand!

I had a Mirena IUD, and spotting was normal. I figured that it was worth it for the benefits. There is a .01% chance you might be pregnant, so maybe take a test if it concerns you, but otherwise trust your doc.
