In the USA, using slang in the language is popular. Soccer is slang for Association Football, which is to seperate from USA's own type of footbal, American Football.

We have "American" football, with helments, sholder pads and a lot of other equipment. Since this commonly became known as football in the US. I believe the original source of soccer came from England where they were trying to separate the two footballs they were playing - soccer and rugby.

I dont know, maybe because they dont have a football as we know it, but they name soccer as "football" because they use their foot to kick the ball, duh!
