After posting my message and givin second thoughts from decent and honest people here in yahoo answers. I decided to keep $12.00 and return the contents and $800.00 to the owner. The money I will keep is for postage and handling of his wallet and some Cold Buds. I will leave no return address; he might have children and needs that money and so today is his blessing and thank you all so much for your posts.

I want to mention that back in 1994 an Indian man lost $10,000 rolled up in a rubber band in the parking lot of Winn Dixie, Colubus, Georgia, and this did hit the news wave if you want to check on it. The man turned it in and never got a reward right away. The news media choked this man so much for being rude that he did'nt even tip the guy...he finally sent him $100.00 Now honesty or not, after a man returns 10,000 I would.ve at least gave him a 1,000 for returning it. You must think twice when you find that kind of money what would you really really do and I can;t honestly answer that unless I found it and have it in my hands.

Would you want him to do that to you? What if that is the only money he has to buy groceries and diapers for his kids? Or his rent money? Or the money for his prescriptions to keep him alive? Be a gent and return it. Maybe he'll give you a reward, or you'll make a new friend out of it. If not, remember at least that what goes around comes around. You're doing the right thing, and your turn to be on the receiving end will come.

If you have any honor and any integrity, you will return the wallet with ALL of its contents intact, including the money. How would YOU feel if you lost YOUR wallet with several hundred dollars cash in it and someone returned it to you with no money in it?

Be a responsible adult, not a greedy little child. Call this person, tell him/her you found the wallet, and make arrangements to give it back. Who knows? The owner of the wallet may give you some money as a thank-you for being an honest person. Remember, what comes around goes around, so whatever you do, you will eventually receive the appropriate "reward" for your actions.

Turn it all in with the wallet. It's not your money and you have no right to it. It's not like you found a $20 bill on the ground or an envelope full of money. In those instances, anyone can claim it's their money, so keeping it might be more justified. But you don't have a leg to stand on here. You found a wallet with all the person's credentials. Taking his money and returning only the wallet is stealing.

Ok here's an idea... Why don't you send back $700 dollars of it, use part of the $112 to pay for shipping, and keep the rest. The owner still gets 86% of his cash, all his cards and nudie pics and you get about 10% after you pay for the shipping. Everyone wins. Take yourself and get something nice for the $100 bucks and still feel good knowing that this poor guy was lucky to have such a nice stranger like yourself find his wallet. Cheers!

Well, is it your wallet and money? If not, you have the ID right with you. The right and proper thing to do is to mail it back to the owner. If you don't want to do that, give it to the nearest police department. They will contact the owner. You may get a reward. Maybe not.

How would you feel if you lost that much money and somebody else kept it?

That money may be destined for bills, medications, loans, etc.

It floors me that people are asking these questions! If you keep the money...it's called STEALING. If you are comfortable being known as a thief and a crook....by all means...keep it. I am not one of those bible thumpers by ANY means, but I live by my own code of ethics. If I have to stand in front of God when I die and he asks me "Why did you steal the money out of that mans wallet when the HONEST thing to do was to return ALL of it?"...and if my answer is "I dunno"....then....I know what the RIGHT thing to do is. Do the right thing. And the things that you already know are morally right.......do THEM.....if you have to ask US if you should do the right thing or not, then, you already know what you should do.

Call the person from a payphone, so they can't use calller ID to trace it to you. Then tell them you found their walllet, laugh and hang up. Next get a brick and tape the wallet to the brick, drive dy the address on the license and toss the brick at the front window... Oh yea take the money out of the wallet before you tape it to the brick.

Let's put it this way:

Can you look yourself in the mirror and not barf if you find out that that money was all the person had and was going to be used to take care of his kids?

Just give the money back, it's the honest thing to do. And if you think nobody would find out if you kept the money anyway, remember this: the truth ALWAYS comes out and Karma has a funny way of biting you in the butt.

maybe it's some rich guy and he's always going around with 800 bucks in his pocket. or maybe that was some guy's money to pay to have his car fixed.. i dunno

the usual finder's fee is 10%. so you're 'entitled' to 81.20 but even that would be stealing. call the person and if they can prove it is their wallet return it to them. they might screw you out of your 10% but at least you did the right thing.

People generally want their cards back, money they sometimes can let go.

If you decide to take money, make sure you give some back to charity as a good will gesture.

I'd give it all back, this money could be putting food on the table for his 5 children and a roof over his head for the next month.
