It's USSR. And, no we're not going to become socialist. Not as long as Rush Limbaugh and people like me are living and breathing. There are too many enlightened folks that realize socialism simply does not work. Even as good as it sounds to so many. To quote an old Ten Years After song: "Tax the rich, feed the poor, til there are no rich no more." Hmmm, sounds kinda gloomy to me.

The last time I looked the USA was still playing the red states and the bible thumpers. Bush is no more socialist than the neocons and conglomerates who own him, If anything, they have pushed us and the world past the brink of World War111, and the so called Christians are pushing for a theocracy.

I pity the next President, Bush and his puppet masters are going to leave him a world in turmoil, our people radically divided and and a national debt that will burden America for decades.

First off, you didn't live under "socialism", you lived in an authoritarian communist police state. The second that "all animals are equal" becomes "some pigs are more equal than others", the switch gets flipped from LEFT to FAR RIGHT.

Same thing in the US, our wonderful welfare state (Western Liberalism) was just hijacked by a neo-con fascist ideology. "Conservatives", never sure of anything but what their dear leaders say, fully believe that supporting Bush's fascist dictatorship is supporting their view of theocracy. Hitler turned on his brownshirts and had the gestapo round them up after they served his purpose, you better believe the Christians are gonna suffer in the end of this too.

Don't be silly. We all know Communism was a miserable failed experiment that made a few corrupt people very rich and the rest victims of miserable poverty. Millions of people were slaughtered for this experiment, by some estimates as many as 100 million in the former Soviet Union, China and other parts of Asia.
The trend now is not towards liberalism or left-wing belief systems, but strongly towards conservatism. I don't see Hippies overflowing in the streets.

God Bless America in ALL of her glorious diversity!

(I am an unapologetic liberal, but my husband grew up in the FSU so I know what I am talking about.)

It already is. Look around you and see how many of the 10 planks of the communist manifesto have been put into place -- i.e. all ten of them so far. Homeland Security and the so-called Patriot Act finished what was left of American Freedom. We used to be a free nation. Now we are socialists and we're too stupid to even know it. What a shame.

You have your terms confused. Every decent country in Europe is Socialist. The USA could easily have the best of everything with both the First Amendment and a single-payer health care system with increased taxes on the wealthy and low copays.
