If they are white, soak in bleach water (about 1/2 cup of bleach)
If they are not white, soak in Tea Tree Oil (about 8-10 drops) or vinegar (about 1/2 cup) mixed in the water.
Make sure they are completely dry before folding to avoid this problem in the future.

Put Vodka in a spray bottle and spray it on the towels. That is a trick that people in the theater use. Vodka TRULY kills odor causing bacteria and doesn't damage even dry-clean only fabrics.

The simplest solution for most odors- baking soda! can be sprinkled directly or used in the wash. Another alternative is a small dose of sunlight.
