Strange question I know, but I ask it for a reason...

Success breeds contempt, and in musical theatre we feed off that fact. Over the years there have been a lot of shows which achieved great acclaim on Broadway that have earned backlash for being so popular--the current trend in jukebox musicals is a good example of this.

Personally, although it was the biggest of all musicals, I loathed and despised "Cats." Dreadful musical, set plots back 20 years (and please don't respond to this just to defend "Cats". I am aware I am in the minority on this opinion.)
However, "Cats" ran for 17 years on Broadway, broke all manner of records around the world, and is now an icon of American musical theatre.

So, the question begs: which massive musical rubs you the wrong way? Which must-have best-show fills you with inertia?? Which "Les Mis" is your personal Kryptonite? Does "Wicked" leave you wasted? Which Tony-winning show left you asking "what the %u@% was that all about?!?"

p.s. I love the way you asked the question.

Answer: I can honestly say that I would never see RENT again. Maybe it's because first time I saw it was with Joey Fatone? I like the music but everything else I dispise.

Also A Chorus Line can suck my... I honestly CAN NOT stand that show. I can't believe it's being revived. Give me my 3 hours back damn it!

I totally agree w/your opinion on Cats. I liked the music, but thought the show was boring. Another show like that for me is Chicago - I really like the music, but the show itself was horrible. There was no real set and it just didn't work for me. I also agree w/the person who mentioned Sweeney Todd. It is a weird show and the new production made it even weirder. I can't think of any others right now, but if I do I'll be sure to add to this response.

It's hard to say. I think there are trends that sell tickets and are not necessarily about quality. So do I hate Beauty & the Beast or one of the subsequent Disney productions that currently clutter Broadway?

I love musicals but I have to say huge sections of the Phantom of the Opera were boring. I just didn't feel empathy for that character.

I'm not a big fan of musicals. I do like, "The Sound of Music", "My Fair Lady", however. But "West Side Story" and "Grease" have always been overrated in my opinion.

I really dislike Carousel. The music is quite nice, but I hate the story.
