It's the employer's company and he can do what he/she feels is best for the company. If you want a lower position with less responsibility you need to expect the lower pay that comes with it.

If you are not keeping well or whatever reason do not want much work. Just do not work well for 3-4 months or take holidays or go for some entertainment. Employer are usually prepared for a person not working for a while, else change the job to low profile.

Sometimes it is not in the company's best interest for a person to take a demotion and you also have to keep in mind that there are reasons that the pay is different for 2 different positions.

The employer hired you for a specific position. They can offer you different positions, but you can accept/decline. You cannot decide where you belong in your company. you can request, but they may not have a need for the lower position, or feel that you are the best qualified for that spot. You do not have a "right" for that spot.

You can take a position lower but you can't take the pay with you. You will get the pay that comes with that position.
