Snapping turtles are noted for their powerful beak-like jaws and pugnacious disposition. They have a muscular build with ridged shells that may measure from 50 cm long in Chelydra species to some 80 cm long in the Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macroclemys temminckii). The latter species is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world, weighing up to 100 kilograms. The Common Snapping Turtle (C. serpentina serpentina) and its subspecies are much smaller, weighing up to 17 kilograms in weight. Common snapping turtles kept as pets can become quite corpulent and difficult to move without their co-operation, and require frequent cleaning of their water tanks to remain content and healthy. In some areas they are hunted heavily for their meat. They may live for 80 years or more.

Hi Andie,
It seems you have found one of my favourite turtles.... snapping turtles are beautiful creatures and if cared for properly, they are not dangerous at all.
How long do they live? They can live for over 20 years easily, up to 40 under the right conditions.
How big will they get? Males tend to be bigger than females and they can get up to 15", but I have seen one 18" SCL (straight carapace length).
It is a true commitment to keep a snapping turtle b/c they get very large and you need a pond (over 100 gallons). Plus their poop is the size of carrots, and the water fouls up quickly. It's not an easy animal to care for, but very rewarding.
How fast? Never timed it. But if you treat it nice and keep it in water, it will not get you. Keeping it on land, it will stress it out and raise its hind legs, hiss at you and try to snap. They sometimes give off a musky odour as well. It will not chase and attack you like a snake or a dog.
How heavy? Usually they are around 20 pounds or so, but a good 40 pounder is not unreasonable. I do not bring a scale with me when I go herping.
Here is a caresheet for the common snapper:
