i know that this is kind of a tired answer, and i didn't even check because I'm sure that a lot of people put it, but I think the 1984 San Diego Padres were the greatest team to ever take the field. They had hitting (Alan Wiggins), pitching (Eric Snow), a great bench (Champ Summers), an ethnically diverse outfield (Scottish Kevin McReynolds), a great manager (Dick Williams), and a great mascot (The San Diego Chicken).

On top of that, they were a fun loving team. They loved pranks and hijinks and yuks and nuks. Check the link for a list of great literature about that team (the article is by no means conclusive).

They were robbed of the 1984 world series.

It's pretty clear the 1906 Cubs were the best of all time followed by the 1927 Yankees..And, that's the way it plays out in computer simulations against the greatest teams of all time..Playing full seasons best of all time vs each other the Cubs finish 1st more often than any other team..

I’m going to say the ’29 Philadelphia A’s. Not only did this team win the WS back-to-back 29 and 30 made the WS in 31 as well. They had to play the New York Yankees lead by Babe Ruth. This team was voted by Sports Illustrated as the most underrated team of all time. 5 of the starting 9 batted over .300 and 2 of them had 30+ home runs ( in a steroid free era). 104 wins, .693 winning percentage and 18 games ahead of the second place team.

1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. Beat Red Sox in exciting 7-game World Series in 1975, then swept the Yankees in 1976. Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, George Foster, Davey Concepcion, etc. Imposing line-up top to bottom; hit for average, power, speed. Good defense, decent pitching.
