I don't like either of the other answers. The first is no help because right and left switch based on what side of the door you are on. If I understand the second correctly, he is wrong. If you are on the side it swings to (his words), meaning it swings IN, a left hand door will swing to the right.
My way of remembering it, with your back to the hinges in the doorway, the right handed door will swing to the right and a left handed door will swing to the left. You can stretch your arm out and move it like the door, away from your body, not across it.

Picture yourself standing with your back to the door on the hinge side. Now think about the way the door opens...are the hinges on your right or left? That's how to tell...on the left, its a left handed door...on the right, its right handed.

I've hung a few doors in my time and always considered a right handed to open from left to right, and opposite for a left handed door.

Simple. when looking at the door from the same side as it swings to, open it. If it swings to your right, it is right hand. If it swings to your left, it is left hand.
There are some other rules for outswings (left/right reverse etc.), but that is the simplest answer I can give you.
