Preferably day shift, because I am raising a 6 year old on my own.

Here's what I would do:
1/ Figure out what type of industries would use a cnc machinist (if you don't already know). You could just search for manufacturers or manufacturing in general, too.

2/ Determine what geographical area you want to work in (city/state/zip code) that is near where you want to be.

3/ Then go to a search engine that allows you to search by business type and things near a location, like searchbug.com

Here is a link: http://www.searchbug.com/companyfinder/businessnearaddress.aspx

4/ Analyze the list of companies you get. How I would select which to target for better pay and benefits from this list would be to look at which are union, where their home office is located, and if they are on the Fortune 500.
In my experence, when I was in FL, although companies that are in FL typically don't pay that well, if you found one that was based in the NE US, was union in at least some of their facilities, or was a Fortune 500 company, they generally paid better.

As far as work hours, I would look at either first or third shift. More options

About third shift- If you can stand it, third shift pays better bec of the shift differential and it's is easier to get a job on third than first shift. You can get an overnight sitter, or offer someone with kids a little extra to have your 6 year old sleep at their house. If you did take a third shift job, you can always bid for first shift jobs once they become open (check company's policy for how long you have to wait to bid out once you are hired, usually 6-18 months)

Write a good resume, send it to their HR dept, follow it with a phone call, follow up every 2-3 weeks after that just to check for openings. Also, call and talk to their prd manager and let them know you are looking and interested. Some ppl will talk to you, some won't, but in my experience, the aggressive, but nice candidate (ME!) gets the job.

Also post your resume on Monster.com, hotjobs.com and jobsearch.org as well as looking there for openings.

Good luck to you, I hope this info helps.
