As a matter of fact, they ARE the same, but petrol industry declares them drastically different, because of the price. The only differences are the addition of anti-detonators in diesel fuel, and different colours of each oil, for distinction.

You actually could use the heating oil in Your motor vehicle, but with addition of anti-detonating aditive. However, using diesel fuel as heating oil may produce harmful vapours, due to vaporization of antidetonators. But, with proper chimney draft, it should cause no trouble at all, except for Your home budget.

They are the same substance with a few diferences. There is a huge price difference between the two. For this reason a dye is added to one of them (I can't remember which). It is illegal to use fuel meant for home heating as fuel for a vehicle. There may be some additives to diesel fuel to help the engine run better but home heating oil will work except that it is illegal.

No, heating oils are usally either #2 or #6. The only common element they share with diesel fuel is that both are derived from crude oil. I would suggest that you only use the fuel specified for your furnace, as using an alternate fuel could have disasterous consequences.
