In developed countries we have gone along with policies and ideologies that put power and influence into the hands of greedy people.
Naturally these people use that influence to encourage a system which further enhances and consolidates that wealth and influence. IE: we are encouraged to consume as much as possible as the only way to find satisfaction.. Over time we have forgotten that there are ways of life which require little or no money for a deeply rewarding existance. of course ,now that countries such as the UK are totally controlled ,even to put up a simple hut and live off your own produce has become illegal. You must have permission to live on a piece of land or grow vegetables in any quantity, and land with such permission is used by the greedy to make large profits. In a rural part of Wales ,I bought an acre and a half for £1,600 and lived on it 'illegally 'for 6 years despite official harassment. Down the road 1/2 acre of land with permission was sold for £50,000.
The law says we have to pay up if we want somewhere to sleep or live. I say we have a natural right to live simply on the Earth, if we so wish.
I do believe in planning restrictions, but they should be focused on large developments that have a significant negative impact, on the environment. Even a house ,with road and utility access, has a massive impact compared to a caravan ,tent, hut or garden, but the latter brings little profit, and is frowned upon as being 'different'.
In many ways an expensive life for your pocket means an expensive life for the ecosystem. Only the greedy really profit.
PS: I live on around £1,700 to £2,000 per year.

Only because you want expensive things. Among them, security is one of the most expensive of all!!!
Life per-se is not expensive. Some food, a roof of some kind... then if you want health insurance, a house with a room per person, and a car to "keep up with the Joneses", it becomes very dear.
It's not life, it is our expensive tastes...
