I am interviewing with a new company. They offered me a salary proposal but they want me to consider the bonus as part of the salary. This is not a sales position and the bonus is not guaranteed, it is based off the companies profits.

Would you consider the bonus as part of the salary?

No, the bonus shouldn't be considered in your salary offer. Your salary should be something you can count on, and the bonus is probably based on yours and/or the company's performance during the year. I'd go back to the guys who made you the offer and get them to break it down or let them know you're nervous about this.

I would ask how it is calculated and what the actual bonus has been for the past few years and try to estimate what the bonus might be.

The concept of a bonus sounds good but my employer has basically used it as a way to give everyone a pay cut if they have a bad year because when they added the bonus program they cut way back on raises. And they keep raising the earnings per share required to get a raise with no apparent reason to believe the goals are achievable.

I would much rather have my salary determined by my personal performance than by the company's profits because I can do a great job but senior management can screw up and make the company do poorly.

Depends on who's doing the considering...from your standpoint I wouldn't because as you say no guarantee. Of course you might want to research how often and what size a bonus has been offered in the recent past.

From the IRS standpoint, its taxable income....

No I do not. The position of that company on this issue is in error. They need to correct this by viewing it your way, that is as being not part of salary and which also in the correct way.

No, because a bonus is never guaranteed. Didn't you see National Lampoons Christmas Vacation? :-)
