As long as the jacket fits you well and does not go past the middle of your bottom or have shoulder pads like the eighties it sounds good. I personally would try a cropped cardigan instead but it should do. Just make sure your hair is good too.

Im a guy, and I dont know what a morrissey suit jacket looks like, but if your going with a dress like that, I saw a women in New Orleans with a similar sounding dress and a shaw. And Let Me Tell You !
The jacket may hide you. The shaw may Pride you.
She looked way Sharp ! Lots of class !
Either way, Im sure you ' ll be beautiful !

I love how a woman could pull this off...but a guy in a nice sports jacket with a Smiths shirt or Morrissey shirt underneath regardless of age..would never work..

I would say yes. The black jacket will tame down the dress and the dress will show you have personality. Good choice.

I'm sure you already have, but just make sure the hem isn't very far above your knee, and that the jacket has a little structure (to make it a little more professional).

As long as it's a subtle print. You don't want anything too frilly, poufy, or dramatic. It sounds pretty though.
