Is there anyone here that speeks afrikaans?And if you don't speek it, what do you as a person think of the language? And would you want to learn it?

I speak Afrikaans and a couple of other languages as well. In my first year at Maties as a law student, I was kinda forced to study Afrikaans/Dutch, English, Xhosa/Zulu and Latin. Then I flunked law and continued studying languages. I got my degree in Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
After Maties, I started on Venda and didn't quite finish. Now I live in Seoul and I've picked up Korean from the locals.
Maar ek laaik Afrikaans praat dik stukke. Ek was n bietjie beduiweld die afgelope drie of vier dae, maar het nou bedaar. Al die twak wat die mense deesdae oor SA te prate het maak mens mos baie beswaard. Bliksems!
Ek dink Afrikaans is n bedreigde taal en ek wil he dat almal wat dit praat so moet aanhou. Sodat ons nie ons herkoms vergeet nie. Al was dit hoe moeilik destyds. My laatie sukkel om Afrikaans en Engels te praat, maar is vlot in Koreaans. Maar hy probeer soms en dis goed genoeg vir my.
Afrikaans is oukei in my boek.

I am British and I am trying to learn Afrikaans because my husband is South African. We moved to South Africa a few months ago and believe me you can learn a lot more by being amongst it every day than what you could ever get from a book. I did buy a Teach Yourself Afrikaans book and CD which helped with the basic stuff.
When i hear two people talking Afrikaans i can now follow a converstion even though i don't speak it that confidently. I don't think that i would have chosen to learn the language if i had not emmigrated but now that i am living in SA it seems rude not to make an effort!
Good luck if you are trying to learn Afrikaans, it helps if you know a South African who can help with pronunciation :-)

Im not Afrikaans but I can speak it. Im a teacher so I actually teach it to my little ones, which can be quite amusing sometimes. Its a great language, and has some of the best expressions ever, ones that just wouldnt have the same effect if spoken in English!

I speak and understand Afrikaans but i don't like it. I've never been a fan of the Afrikaans language so id rather not speak Afrikaans. Weird i know but that's me.

I want to understand what you are talking about, why do you switch over to Afrikaans now?
I was unfortunate to be born and raised in Durban where Afrikaans is not a popular language, but at least I can say Afrikaans is 'n lekker taal. Ek kan nie afrikaans praat nie, maar ek kan afrikaans verstaan. Hooray! I tried to speak few words.

I don't speak afrikaans but being German I get to know what it's about when I read it. To me it's a mix between old fashioned German, dutch and English. But when people start speaking I am really lost... Words I don't wanna miss anymore are lekker and kak ;-)
A friend of mine from Holland says it is like dutch, only reverse and without Grammar...

I speak and read,write afrikaans. I think it is truly an mazing language.

It's one of our official languages i speak it , due to the fact that last century afrikaans was an official school language.
Anyways i Dont have a problem with it it's kinda cool speaking another language.

Ek stem saam met Porgie....love Afrikaans, my first language. Afrikaans is bakgat! its a lovely language, we use a lot of metaphors...for example candyfloss is "spookasem"....literally translated it means a ghost's breath.

I don't speak it but i love it just like any other languages used as a means of communication among various group of people,that is unanimously agreed upon to get their message across.
there will always be need for a means of communication where we have a group of people.I came from a country (Nigeria) that is multi-dialet and i think it is great.so if there is any need for me to learn any language,i shall not hesitate to do so.it is a means of culturalization and socialization.Right.
