i've seen shoes over power lines, too. i don't think it means anything, just someone goofing off, with nothing better to do than to see who can throw the shoes over the line first. competition.

A number of sinister explanations have been proposed as to why this is done. Some say that shoes hanging from the wires advertise a local crack house where crack cocaine is used and sold. Others claim that the shoes so thrown commemorate a gang-related murder, or the death of a gang member, or as a way of marking gang turf. A newsletter[1] (PDF) from the mayor of Los Angeles, California reports that "[m]any Los Angeles residents fear that these shoes indicate sites at which drugs are sold or worse yet, gang turf," and that city and utility employees had launched a program to remove them. These explanations have the ring of urban legend to them, especially since the practice also occurs along relatively remote stretches of rural highways that are unlikely scenes for gang murders or crack houses.

No clue really. I just remember that I did it when I was young too. Probably because I didn't like the shoes and hoped they'd hit the powerline instead...

When I was in the military we threw a pair of boots over the power lines when we were leaving active service. It just signified that we didnt have to wear the boots anymore, that we were done. Beyond that I dont know.

On a military post it means that you are leaving the military...this is especially true on Fort Bragg, when you are airborne, where they pitch their jump boots over lines.

Has no "meaning". They just do it when they're bored for entertainment. It's mostly a "guy thing" - kind of like blowing stuff up. It's fun in and of itself for no explainable reason.

Because adolescent males (the most likely culprits) are still rather thoughtless in their actions, eager to impress their friends and having some "friend" dare them to do it, being essentially idiots, they did.

Not sure if this is still the case, but it used to be used to mark the location of a drug dealer.

I have heard that it has something to do with a gang being in the area. But I don't know how true that is.
