I was surprised how many racist remarks there were when discussing this case (especially in Russian sites): started with Zidane and ended up having rasist remarks about arabs, terrorists, etc. IT'S ALL HORRIBLE! RASISTS SHAME ON YOU!!!

Unfortunately, there are that many racists although they may not say it outloud. People just generalize too much nowadays.
In the caase of Materazzi and Zidane, Materazzi could just be speaking in the heat of the moment and not really meaning the things he says.

Funny...If the tables were turned, somehow I feel like everyone would still be on Zidane's side. It's not like he's never done anything like this before. I'm not quite sure what to call it...but it seems everytime something happens, and Italians are involved...people take the opposing side. Is that racism, prejudice...or jealousy?

I'm not so sure anymore!

One other thing. How can a guy who scored 3 goals, 2 from the penalty spot, got sent off in a match with a move that would make Roy Keane proud, and already banned for one match previously in the tournament win this award? Cannavaro deserved the award much more than Zidane did. Had the tables been switched, and Fabio was retiring, I do believe he would've been awarded the Golden Ball. If I was Zidane, I'd be ashamed that I won this trophy, on the grounds of what I did in the past, not what I did in the present.

I know that Zidane really deserved the red card. Even if FIFA decide to take back the best player award from him, Zidane will still deserve it. But I hope FIFA really examine why he did that bull action toward Materazzi. I hope FIFA also investigates the one who started the fire.

It was really a shame that racist things still colored the event, especially in the grand final match when two best team should show not only their best performance of the game, but also their entire mentality and sportivity (Is provocating part of the strategy to win?). It was more shameful for the event in which they keep sounding the slogan of "It's time to make friends, say no to racism". That slogan was always said before they started every match. So tragic!

Unfortunately, our world is filled with racism. As much as we would like to get rid of it all, we will never be able to terminate racist individuals. I believe that most people have a hint of racism in them. They may not acknowledge it, but when it's time to prove that their country is the best, ranting and insulting others start. At all costs, these inviduals must protect their country's integrity...but instead of protecting it, they make themselves look worse.

It's such a shame to see racism escalate to the level it has during the World Cup. This sport was meant to bring so many countries together, all in admiration and love for the sport. Instead, it turned into a massive festival of insulting and bashing. I was shocked to realize what proportions it took...

So what if the Portuguese were diving and faking many falls. Does that make them "uneducated" as some would say? No. So what if Zidane headbutted another player? Does that make all French people brutes? No. It's unbelievable how people tend to take whatever occurs on the field and turn it against an entire country.

You may not like people, you may not like a country, but you have to show some respect. I think everybody deserves respect and unfortunately, I am describing a utopian world.

That's my two cents :-)

Someone made a rumor that Materazzi said something about Zidane being a terrorist, which caused some people to think that Italians were racist. The Italians then accused those people of being racist and it became one big argument.

See what rumors start?

I saw Zidane on a french tv show yesterday. He has explained Materazzi had told some remarks about his sister and his mother but no racists words.

You're right! We all pretent to be good humnas, but we act so stupid. I don't understand why the color of skin or the relifon is so important when talking about somebody. I think those are irrelevant detalis. What counts is a person's behaviour and personal qualities, not the contry in which he was born.
Would you appreciate me more if I were white than if I were black? Would me answer be better if I were a Christian than if I were a Muslim? Or would I be smarter if I had been born in USA than if I had been born in Somalia?
I think we should judge a person according to his acts, and stop believing that someone's gestures are difining his whole country.
DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!!!

I am not a racist - I don't hate anybody more than necessary.

Funny how people of the same race can say and do things to each other but if there is a race difference, then all hell is loose!

I think we should all shag a person of different race until we are one big world of happy mulattos!

Everyones got a little racist inside. Seriously, just about everyone doesnt get on with another, obviously we shouldnt make a big deal about and go round insulting or hurting people but if you dont like a group or religion then you cant really change that, you just gotta learn to live with it.
