We have cracks between the cinder blocks in our basement and a lot of seepage from the walls . We have had a lot of rain lately and we do not have a sump pump. We have asked for estimates on repairing the basement and I need to know what I should ask them and what to look out for.

but if you really want to know how and get your hands dirty, go to ACE hardware or any do-it-yourself hardwares, go to waterproofing sections, there you will find some application materials that expand when water seeps in and stays permanently. After that, have a good waterproof/watertight masonry and paint finishes.

First, find the best contractor available, the longest in business. Obtain several estimates. Somewhere near the middle "should; be right. Your problem is ripe for rip-off artists.

The problem is outside your foundation, the symptoms are in your basement.
Inquire about a drain "trough", outside, along your foundation and where it will terminate. Repairs inside are elementary for most contractors.
If a drain pipe is used, ask how to prevent clogging by leaves and trash accumulation. If it clogs, your problem will return. Ask about methods to keep it free running, via a clean-out opening or something similar.
Good Luck!

Contact several contractors for estimates how they plan on fixing the problem and ask for phone numbers and names of people they have serviced, you can also check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if they have any complaints filed against them. Good Luck.
