Well if your online games are laggy I assume its your computer thats the problem so we'll avoid the big MMORPG giants like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars etc.
There are however numerous, fun, enjoyable Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) that would work on your computer. Games like, Conquer, Eudemons, Silkroad (granted the servers are a little laggy sometimes on Silkroad). If you need more info simply click the corresponding links below this. And best of all they are all FREE online games and highly enjoyable.
Enjoy, and see you in game. :-D

Tibia, although it is just a 2D MMORPG, but the uniqueness of the game binded me for quite some time. Player need to type out the spell name in order to cast spell, and this is the matter of memorizing the spell name and how fast you can get it done. Dialogue base item purchasing is also one of the fun part of the game where you have to say "hi" to the shopkeeper in order to purchase and "bye" to complete the process, the shopkeeper won't entertaint more than 1 player at a time, kindda realistic but not everyone likes it...
If you would prefer minigames, try out http://www.miniclip.com and http://www.orisinal.com , games from these sites are quite fun and challenging, hope it may help!

I like first person shooter online game like counterstrike, Halflife or games like warcraft are good games. But the most period of time i spent on is Diablo 2 Expension Battle Net. Although this game is very old but going online is another kind of new experience, it can be addictive once u get a hang of it! Trust me, lots of things for u to explore and item for u to create your own runeword weapon, armor, boots etc.

Well Mu On line is a quite good game, is free and you can find a lot of servers unofficial to play.
Guild wars you have to pay, but you can find unofficial servers.
Gun Bound is very easy and you have a lot fun.

My personal favourites are Scrabble, Wordsteal (like Scrabble), Acrophobia and Slingo.
It really depends on what sort of game you like to play; I prefer trivia and word games.
