Today, the pole star, the star almost directly aligned with the earth's axis in the northern hemisphere, is Polaris. Four or five thousand years ago, however, the north pole of the earth's spin axis pointed to Thuban, and in about 12,000 years from now, it will point near Vega. On a 25,000 year cycle, Vega in Lyre and Thuban in draco are some of the major stars that would be an eventually back to Polaris.
