yes. With the difficulties the Soviet Union faced in its dissolution, Islamic seperatists (Chechnyans) took advantage and tried to start their own state. This method is actually classic Islamic style. Get enough Islamic people into an area, take over the government using their own methods, play on their fear of being "racest", and then vote the country into Islamic rule. Check out the history of African and Asian countries in the last 100 years. Almost every war, every massacre has had Islamic people holding the swords. Chechnya was no different. We were foolish not to support Russia more in this.

historically it`s a part of Ottoman empire but was claimed by soviet as their after the ww1. majority of Chechnyan is Muslim & majority of them want to be free from soviet such as ukraine, georgia, latvia and other ex-soviet got. Since Chechnya is in Europe and as we know most of european country is a secular nations, independence of Chechnya is like a THREAT to them. We can compare this with independence of Ukraine, all europe & western countrys give their support bcoz they are not Muslim majority. Talk about barbaric act, what happen to Bosnian during balkan war? who is the victim?

Chechens constitute the largest NATIVE ETHNIC GROUP ORIGINATING in the North Caucasus region.
They refer to themselves as NOKHCHI.
The Russian term for the Nokhchi - "Chechen"
The current resistance to Russian rule began during the late 18th century (1785-1791) as a result of Russian expansion into the Lands ORIGINALLY INHABITED by the NOKHCHI PEOPLE.
