ESL stands for English as a Second Language, EFL is English as a Foreign Language. This is the main difference, although with EFL, English might be the third or fourth language spoken rather than just the second

As I understand it, ESL (English for Speakers of Other languages) is more akin to Basic Skills - in that it is quite basic in level. EFL (English as a Foreign Language) is studied at a higher level - ie, for more advanced speakers. The examinations at EFL level are set by Cambridge. ESL accreditation is much more basic - how to get started, or get by in English.

Don't quote me on that, though! It's been a while since I was involved in either!

ESL, English as a Second Language. A child classed as ESL usually speaks more than one language, usually uses another language at home, but has usually been brought up with English as well. Therefore, a bilingual child has ESL

EFL, English as a Foreign Language. A child who does not speak English or is learning to speak English. Often they have recently moved to the country, hence the "foreign" aspect.

English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It is a matter of if English is you first language that you speak, or another language.

According to my understanding, ESL is for people who speak one language (their mother tongue) and want to learn English.

EFL is for people who want to learn English as their third or fourth language. For example many kids in Africa like the ones I teach, speak their mother tongue from birth, then they start to learn Swahili when they are quite young (by ear, as it is the National language, and then at school) and when they reach upper primary they start learning English seriously.

There is probably little difference in the approach except , perhaps, with the latter there has to be a slower pace.
