Get a cat for mice... a dog for rats, the latter wont live where there is a dog.
Mice and rats don't live together either.
There are devices that emit a high pitch frequency sound, cheap to buy, plug into a wall socket, have heard that they are quite good, all insects and rodents dislike them and wont come near. And they are safe for domestic pets.
Personally, I use a mouse trap if ever a mouse appears and have had successfully got rid of mice in the past many times.
Instead of cheese, use tuna fish as bait! Since the cheese thing and mice, is a myth. they eat many things, but tuna worked for me within twelve hours, and use gloves when disposing of the carcass and mind your fingers in case it isn't dead, or the trap springs back again when you take it out!
Don't use poisons if you have a pet or small children.

I have a very old farm house, mice are a nightmare (especially this time of year). I purchased several of the High Frequency Noise things that are supposed to keep mice away, WASTE OF MONEY.
Poison (very expensive and I find I need to keep changing brands as it becomes ineffective after a while) is the only thing to do! I lay plenty poison outside, well hidden away in nooks and crannies, then after about a week you will notice mice running about DRUNK. It is nearly impossible to stop them getting into old houses, but I find keeping the poison down outside certainly helps. Since the silage was cut here, I can hear 1 or 2 of them running under the floorboards through the night.
Time to put down more of the blue stuff!!
Good Luck

The ultra-sonic gizmo's actually do work; they are good for keeping spiders and other bugs away too.
Mine cost about £15 and solved the problem in a couple of days; never seen a spider since either. Just looks like a plug-in air freshner.
You get them in any garden centre or DIY store.
Sends out a sonic pulse that they just dont like; so rather than having to deal with this shrill noise - they leave. You dont hear a thing really; mine just has a tiny click every few mins so you know its working.

Set mouse traps wherever you think they may reach them, loft/attic.under stairs? Try and think where they are coming/going. They have to either roam the house or enter/exit the house for food. Not for the squeamish this approach, not nice emptying the traps. But you can SEE whether your measures are taking any effect. Poisonous feeds can leave the little beggars to die, and decompose, anywhere. I used the trap method to get rid of mice in my house, did the trick in a few days.

if you have dead mice in the wall, you have to open the wall to remove them, or they will continue to smell the house up until they decay. Check around the foundation and fill any and all holes with caulk, or steel wool.
