Well, the main reason Linkin Park breaks up is because of the song demands. It's been from the start that LP did not agree to insert the rap element of the band rapper cuz' they thought that the rock demands are even higher than the rappie thingy.
So, that's how Fort Minor came in. Mike Shinoda and Jay-Z was making a project since at the end of last year, which separates and focuses only the rap element to other side, so that means, no more rock and rap being mixed up...just rock for LP and rap for FM.
I couldn't say that this is totally 100% correct. But, I just got it from the song itself. I mean from most of the song lyrics inside the Fort Minor : The Rising Tied album.
That's how I know that they had some conflicts whether want to bring up the rap thingy inside the rock songs or not...Mike almost got quit at first...but the team members called him back as their first experimental album got some demands not only on the rock element but also on the rap thingy...

They broke up because the mojority of the band didn't want to do the team up album with Jay-Z. Thought it was a bad idea. Almost 4/5 of their audience quit after they did that. Doing anything with rap is a bad idea. Including being a rapper yourself. Rock has a higher fanbase then rap does.
Edit : Yeah, they broke up like, almost a year ago.

They haven't broken up. In fact they are working on a new album./
