Materazzi will never tell the truth about what he said because he knows that will get him in a lot of trouble.

Put yourself in Zidane's shoes for a moment. From what I've read, this is a pretty fair account of what actually happened:

Let's say your mother recently fell ill and went to the hospital. Then, while you play a soccer game, someone grabs your shirt, and you joke about it, even though you're tired, injured, and stressed about just missing a huge goal.

But then that person tells you "calm down. everyone knows you're the son of a terrorist whore. I hope your family dies a terrible death. So **** off."

Given all that, how do you think YOU would react to this? And what do you think would be the "right" thing to do?

Also I should add that Zidane did try to ignore the insults and walk away. But Materazzi kept the insults going. This video shows it pretty well:

I don't think anyone can say for sure how he would react. Zidane was in a special situation: playing the final match of his career - a World Cup final, being injured at his shoulder, tired after 110 minutes of running, stressed about the score and the fact that he missed to score a goal, but also about his mum's health.
And this Materazzi, anonymous player in comparison with Zizou, starts insulting him. Not once, not twice, but for three times, repeating the same thing...No matter what Materazzi said, it's obviouse that it was something very serious...So he reacted! Not as a professional football player, but as a human being.
Your question is very good, but I don't know the answer. Probably I would have hit Materazzi harder than Zidane did. Or probably I would have walked away...Who knows?
We will find the truth only when we will be playing in the final of a WC, on our last match, after a glorious career, and somebody will insult us. But I am quite sure that this will never happen, so we will never know...

P.S: To tell you the truth, I understand Zidane's reaction. It was a human reaction. He may be the god of football, but he is still a man...

Okay this is a really hard question.... I dont know what to say but in the school yard when u play footbal you hear injurys like this and u dont react as zidane did and that match was his last one and that match was the FIFA WORLD CUP FINAL and he did that before the penaltys and left his team with 1 good penalty scorer in minus.... I like Zidane like a plyaer he probably is one of the best players ever with Pele and Maradona or Van BAsten or Kruyf or Paolo rossi but in that SUnday night he disapointed me....and no one can change this ...Now we wont remember only what cool goals he marked or what dribles he done we will remember that in his last match he took a red card too.... and he diddnt did this by making a fault or something...My favourite RApid BUCHAREST player took in his last match a red card too but he took it because the refere was idiot.....

I would ignore him or insult him too.Why did he react like an animal? He's a professional player, after all.If I was Zidane,i would think my teammates,my country and the children all over the world first and then what a player say about my family to get me out of the game!

walk away, acting out the way zidane did would not accomplice anything other than show everyone that you have a bad temper it would set a bad example to everyone watching.

The next time someone insults you, attack them and when you have to appear in court use that as your defense and see what happens in court.

by the way this is Zidane third time he lost his temper in the World Cup..

If Materazzi would have insulted me this way, I would have head-butted him and started kiskcing him when he's lying.
Zidane, you are a REAL MAN! I love you more now when heard that you hit him to defend your mother and sister!

Materazzi is proud to be a "dirty" player, but when Zidane headbutted him, he fell on the pitch and starting crying.
I would't have headbutted him, I would have punched him.

I will finish the game and win the world cup...
Then pass my shirt to Materazzi and ask him to **** off and try harder next time. Maybe he can win then without me around.
Hahahaha.. then walk off to kiss my cup..

this question proves that unfortunately this planet is full of people that can be manipulated as the can believe even the most obvious lie, when they strongly WANT to believe it.

it's for people like you that there's so many hatred and violence around, if it's not an insult is the color of the shirt, or the halitosis does not matter because hating is the purspose !
