The epithelial cells lining the stomach release bicarb and mucous which forms a barrier between the epithelial cells and the acid also being excreted. When the secretion of bicarb by the epithelial cells is disrupted (e.g. COX 1 inhibitors), ulcers can form.

Stomach MIGHT NOT remain intact in the case of ulcers, but in the healthy person, amazingly the stomach does remain intact. Parietal and chief cells lining GI tract, esp stomach, help with this homeostasis mechanism and the biochemistry of gastric acids, enzymes and mucus secretions. Very concentrated HCl (very low pH) is required for the stomach to begin its protein digestion of our food by the active protein digesting enzyme called pepsin. Some of the stomach cells' Golgi bodies secrete mucus to help protect the GI lining from this very strong HCl acid burn. (1-2 pH) Also, pepsinogen is the not-yet-active precursor form of the active protein digestive enzyme pepsin. Pepsinogen is present in the stomach, but is not activated into pepsin yet. It becomes activated only in the presense of the HCl low pH and when dietary protein is in the stomach, thus protecting the action of the pepsin enzyme on the protein molecules that make up the mbns of stomach cells of the actual GI tract tissue during the rest of the day when we are not eating anything. The pH and temperature of stomach must also be correct for pepsinogen to be activated into pepsin and work on these cellular and organelle and histological proteins. Mucus provides protective barrier too. Ulcers are when this homeostasis is out of balance; ulcers are also aggravated by the Heleobactor pyrens bacterium. A mixture of personality type (type A stress monger) which activates the stress hormones, this ulcer H p bacterium, and the imbalance of acid-mucus contributes to ulcers. Drinking water with a meal can interfer with proper protein digestion, so if someone has gi problems, this might help them! (water dilutes the stomach pH and makes it too neutral for pepsinogen conversion to pepsin) Taking alkaline-basic baking soda (sodium bicarb) orally (like Alka Seltzer) and drinking a glass of whole milk only temprorarily soothes the acidic stomach and will eventually make stomach acids (dump in more HCl due to all the alkalinity and fat there) worse after somach protein is broken down to aminio acids and fats in milk break down to fatty acids, so many people suffereing ulcers do need to modify diet, take antibiotics to control bacterium and thus help heal gastro-duodenal-peptic ulcers which can even bleed from becoming so deep.

i think u hav made a reference to the presence of HCL in the gastric juice which is secreted by the walls of the stomach. The strength of an acid depends upon its concentration and as HCL is diluted by the presence of water it doesnt harm the gastric walls its function is digestion by splitting the food molecules and thus it is necessary

well the body can also produce bicarb to neutralize the acid once it's done digesting food. if the HCl sits there it will do dammage, but the body for the most part takes care of itself

well the answer to your question is quite disgusting but true. The stomach is lined with mucus(in plain English snot) which prevents the stomach from being digested by the gastric juices and hydrochloric acid secreted by it!
