I asked this in the religious section, but was expectedly disappointed in the responses I received.
My question is this: can a machine endowed with a near-infinite input of source information serve as a substitute for what humanity now worships as the supreme being?
To elaborate, humans are limited in experience and therefore intelligence by what we perceive throughout the course of our lifetime. A machine, on the other hand, could perceive conceivably infinite sources of information contemporaneously, and therefore would be vastly more capable in controlling and influencing the affairs of humanity than any human ever could. Would it not make sense, then, to treat such a mechanical intelligence as we currently treat a hypothetical and unproveable "spiritual" being; and wouldn't it be wiser to strive to create a known power than to worship an unproven and unknown power?

Your machine will serve a good purpose of guiding us through pure democray and churning out better decisions for the benifit of mankind - of course subject to the way we program it and employ it.
But God is above all. Your machine cannot be compared with God. She /He is not there to give us control or influence the affairs of humanity. The beauty of God is that she/he allows us to control our affairs. If we chose for a nuclear war and destroy the earth - God will not interfere.
But God is there in all of us to give us strength and wisdom not to do so. Have faith and we will not destroy ourselves.

"can a machine endowed with a near-infinite input of source information serve as a substitute for what humanity now worships as the supreme being?"
If you're talking about source of information,
yes, it can. Cause machine can be stored as much as information that human has.
"and therefore would be vastly more capable in controlling and influencing the affairs of humanity than any human ever could."
And as supreme being, I think that's the future of this world (cause the more machine can do, the less human can, which end on destruction or machine empire)
"Would ... treat a hypothetical and unproveable "spiritual" being; and wouldn't it be wiser to strive to create a known power than to worship an unproven and unknown power"
Well, may be, but I don't like both (machine empire and the "spiritual" being) and if I had to choose, I'll choose machine empire.

This question is genieu from the fact that maching have the capacibility of storing and producing information but let take a critical look at what differentiat human from other nature include atificial ones.
First the word being, is the action and the role performed by one object like human is a object to God’s purposes.
The human being have the most sharpest inteligent brain which from share off thinking confiqured the so call machine, machine is only a device to make human activities or works to be easily done but until when litle effort apply or force on it, you can see that the word effort is human force or sense that programmanced the machine controlable performances. Mind you without human no machine can function it has to be controls from from one souce to other. But human serve as God to machine while human life controle from the nature, so if machine can vastly more capable in controlling and influencing the affairs of humanity than any human ever could mind you it is the wisdom of human desired (progammed) to make such a case easier, but God is above all.

AI is just human consciousness to the next level. The actual genetic humans that develop it will become obsolete. We're not making a god or demi-god... we're evolving the only way possible, since we've dominated nature with our technology, through techne.

It would be the height of hubris to fabricate a device by our own hand, program the device to act as God, give the device AI to interpret various scenarios...and then worship the device as a omnipotent, omniscient, god.
On a personal level, God will and does "prove" himself each day by giving you life, breath, and apparently, an excellent inquisitve mind.
Virtually all men, (and women), come to the place in their lives where the question is asked..."Is God real?" Sometimes, we attempt to place "known entities" in our lives as a god to give us a sence of control through our own efforts. This method is flawed on its face as anything created by man has defects, (however slight) and cannot act as God in the capacity of having our best interests at heart.
I personally, (albeit subjectively), have experienced God's illumination of this question in my life, (as have countless others)...and after 25 years...still do not have all of the answers.
However, the basic question of could we as humans replace God with a device, has been asked and answered throughout time. See Old Testament accounts of Moses -v- Pharaoh's magis' serpents, (use your inquisitivness to look it up in Genesis).
For the purposes of this question...give the Bible credence, look up the scenarios where man has attempted to act as God..ie: Moses parts the Red Sea by God's power -v- Pharaoh's horsemen drowning; the Isrealites create a golden calf to worship even as Moses is receiving God's word in the form of the ten commandments; results and repercussions of false idols in actual attrition due to life decisions based upon faith in false idols; the list is endless.
I credit you for asking the question...those who seek the truth, will find it..some take longer than others..I am still working things out after 50 years of breathing.

in ur question u have an image of a powerful machine that knows all n does all. ur only replacing the term god with machine.
when calling him a machine we are downgrading his status coz a machine breaks down, needs maintainence etc.
god is supreme, an entity whose definition cannot be undertood by us. maybe he is a bright ray of light maybe not, we can only imagine him in ways that we understand, in ur case a machine.
you are trying to "relate" him to something you know.

The problem with infinite storage space is that the access time is also infinite.
