At one time science could not answer the question why there were seasons or why some "stars" seemed to wander in the sky. But it can now. Just because science cannot answer your questions now does not mean that it will not be able to in the future.

Vedic sciences (ancient Vedic texts thousands of years old) answer all these questions in both Bhaghavad Gita (As It Is) and Srimad Bhaghavatam translated into most languages by Srila Prabhupada during the 70s. As modern western science studies these issues using western based sceintific method and experimentation, many of the modern western theories match the Vedic explanations given in the ancient Vedic slokas.

Sometimes, I liken the human existence to having received a PC with a bunch of Software BUT no user manual.

Human = Hardware (Body) + Software (Spirit/Soul)
Bible = User Manual

or

Human = Evolution ware
Science = User Manual still in progress

In the higher realms of physics it is claimed that matter IS energy. So your dichotomy is false. Also, to claim that dead=no energy is ridiculous. All matter posesses some kind of energy, at least due to the fact that its temperature is above the absolute zero. A dead organism does not transform chemical energy into mechanical energy and heat through metabolism, but that's about it. And the postulate about us being leaches... Well, in a sense, we're all leaches, even the leaches. However, we get out energy from the sun, essentially, that seems to give it away voluntarily. And when we die, we give all of our matter and energy back to the earth, so the debt is paid in full.
