A shine-stopper for your t-zone
Keep the center of your face shine-free by using oil-absorbing lotions strategically, makeup artist Burke says (one of her favorites is Shiseido Pureness Anti-Shine Refreshing Lotion, $25, which also minimizes the look of enlarged pores). “Spot-apply down the center of the forehead onto the nose, along the sides of the nose, and on the center of the chin,” she suggests. “Wait a minute, let it set, then dust over it with colorless, translucent powder.” If you use foundation or tinted moisturizer, apply it over the oil-absorbing lotion, before the powder. Your skin will look clean and matte, and will stay that way for hours.

Sunburn concealer
Every once in a while, you might miss a spot with your sunscreen. And if you’ve ever tried to camouflage the telltale redness, you know how unnatural the results can appear. “The makeup looks obvious and heavy, like it’s painted onto your skin,” makeup artist Burke explains. A better strategy: “Smooth on a golden-hued self-tanner,” she says (we like Clarins Radiance-Plus Self Tanning Body Lotion, $39, or Neutrogena Instant Bronze Sunless Tanner and Bronzer In One, $9.99, for their realistic shades). “It cancels out the red tones in your skin, leaving you with a gorgeous, bronzy color.”

Sunny nails
When nail polish mixes with the summer sun, the result isn’t always pretty. “Ultraviolet rays can bake pigments into nails, causing them to turn a dingy yellow,” says Julie Serquinia, owner of the Paint Shop nail salon in Beverly Hills. Her solution? Denture cleanser. Not glamorous, maybe, but it works, she says. “The bleaching agents help lighten and lift stains, even removing traces of pigment.” Just follow the directions on the box and let your fingertips soak for 4 or 5 minutes. If your nails are not white after that, buff them softly to get rid of any lingering discoloration you may have. Finish with a protecting top coat containing UV filters (like OPI’s UV Cure Top Coat, $12.99).

Water, Water, Water. Drinking plenty of water is great for your skin; it gives it more of a glow. Also, wear sunblock whenever you head out in the sun (even in winter).
