From what I understand, most animals will only have sex with the same sex when the opposite sex isn't available.

Many species have been observed to display homosexual behavior for relief when members of the opposite sex is not available (for whatever reason), but I think our own species are masters at doing all kinds of strange things in above-mentioned situation. Doesn't mean those things are natural. Whether they're moral is an altogether different argument and a matter of opinion.
Why do you ask?

I believe strongly that it is more common with humans, animals are not subject to mental malfunctions as easily, and generally only the strongest animals survive, they call it survival of the fittest.

If a homosexual animal existed in nature which were a predator then it would probably be killed by its pray, or at very least realize the gender differences through scrapping, and survive through understanding.

Animals just take care of business in a animal fashion it is not usually pleasant.

The list foming on these kinds of observations over the past several decades is becoming quite long now, with many "same sex" sexual behaviorioral patterns seen in many different animals. Dolphins, sea gulls, lizards are a few more to add to the list here seen on Yahoo Answers.

Yes. I've actually witnessed homosexual behavior within penguins on a biology trip to the zoo. This may have been because in captivity they're wasn't enough mates of the opposite sex. I don't know if it happens in the wild though.

rats can be homosexual. when a male rat is tossed out of the colony, it often joins up in all-male colonies and can be observed subduing its sexual urges with other male rats. i am not so sure its for preference, more like a last resort.
