1.Social Democracy is a type of regulated capitalism in which the state sets up a system that promotes social and economic equity, but still allows for individual freedom.
2. Concerning poverty in America, I fear my language was a bit too harsh. What I meant was general poverty in any form. Furthermore, if you think poverty is not severe in America, take a trip down to Baltimore; you will be very surprised.

I think people in the US would have learned there is poverty in their own country during the news coverage for Hurricane Katrina, but then again, some people like to continue to hide their head in the proverbial sand. I live in Canada and where I live, I can take people to various neighbourhoods and they will learn what western poverty is like ... if any of them have cell phones at all, it is because they can't afford a landline or their shelter is so unstable, that installing a landline would be pointless. Most of them do not drive. Those that do tend to drive older cars ... in fact, a couple who was one of my clients lived in their car.
Social democracy is an important step; however, people need to develop the value systems upon which social democracy is based before it would be effective. I meet people who grossly overestimate the amount of money people receive on welfare and then opine that such people should have their lives strictly monitored by the government in a similar way to the way somebody's life on parole is monitored. I hear people tell me about how so and so took a taxi to the beer store, went to get groceries and then took the same taxi back to pick up their kids from school ... I say, well well, I suppose if the person had a car,. they wouldn't be needing a taxi.
It is important to educate ourselves about social policies and become aware of how the so-called social policies in US and Canada tend to help retain a class structure, as opposed to opening more doors for these same people to the opportunities the rest of us enjoy.

First, America is NOT a poverty stricken country. Poverty (the real poverty, not what you call poverty in America) is when you eat less than 2,000 calories a day, have no access to safe drinking water, and live in a neighborhood that does not have indoor plumbing.
Second, define social democracy; it means different things to different people.
Third, in the long run, the most important determinant of national income (and, hence, poverty) is the quality of institutions. I would suggest you read a couple of articles by Dani Rodrik:

What is social democracy? Is it a fancy way of saying Socialism? Define poverty in America. Is it a person earning less than $10K per year, driving a new car, talking on a cell phone, wearing $200 nike's?
Why is it America's responsibility to solve world poverty? Doesnt the governments of poor countries have any responsibility in it?

Social Democracy can do good for the betterment of a sciety... but I dont think that its a premier thing, that will eliminate poverty from a country or society...
what thing that really matters is "Social Equity"...
if there is social equity... there wil be an automatic poverty elimination..
