It really does depend on the type of small business.

One way to get more trade/customers and therefore money it to make sure you've got a website first then try getting free links from other websites like http://www.apexlaptops.co.uk or http://www.freelegaladviceuk.tk or any other website that'll link to yours. Some may charge you whilst others may do so for free.

Another thing to try is posting a free classified advert like http://www.vivastreet.co.uk or http://www.gumtree.com or http://www.craigslist.org which can help.

Also, consider what you are selling and where you are selling it. Selling something rare is a good idea but then again selling something popular can be good.

Not only that, consider your prices too. I've always thought that the cheaper something is, the more it'll sell. For instance, music sold for £29.99 at Amazon or Play.com might sell less than a game sold for £19.99 at CD-WoW due to the better price.

Good luck.

Its not just you, we started a haulage business 3 yrs ago and are finding it so hard. In this country there is no incentive or help. By the time we have paid what is due to the Inland Revenue/Customs & Excise, its hardly worth it!!! Last quarter we were 2 days late paying our V.A.T. only because of cash flow and they SENT US A DEMAND FOR A PENALTY FEE 10% OF WHAT OUR PAYMENT WAS £112.01... to be paid immediately
You dont say what type of business you have, and a lot of the time it does depend on that ie: takeaway food shops, hairdressers, taxi company........ a lot of money can be made because customers usually pay cash.... That way it wont seem like you are just running your business for the taxman

Can you tell the TAXMAN is defo not my friend??

Good luck, hope things get better for you

Compared to offline businesses, the investment required to start an online business is minimal. A popular way of earning money on the internet is by providing information and services. This can be monetised by advertising or charging a subscription. You can also make money online by selling products on auction websites like eBay or through your own website.
