Windows Defender can be a pain: it sometimes gives false positives, especially regarding components of some modem software ( I had this problem with Tiscali's modem)
You should be ok with your set up
You can safely add
Spywarebalster - http://www.filehippo.com/download_spywareblaster/
as it works well with spybot

You could also have a look at Prevx

"This free program protects your PC against the installation of spyware and hack attacks that bypass anti-virus or firewall products including Sasser, Blaster and the latest MyDoom variants"

You didn't mention a firewall but I presume you have one. If not use Zonealarm Free: it works well with Avast

I think you have to much security. I Use free version AVG and IE7 which has antiphishing software which you can download from microsoft update. I've had no problems since using XP pro with windows fire wall.

P.s if yo are using broadband make sure the network card has not been accidentaly removed from your start up folder (if its wireless), that could be the problem.
