In some European countries people who are unemployed have to do work for the Council. They would be the people emptying the bins, digging the roads etc. I think that would be a good idea.

This is a major sore spot for me!!! People won't bring it up anymore cause it infuriates me so much. I mean I do not mind paying taxes to be honest. Also, I have nothing against people who are on benefits. The only people I resent, well actually deteste, are the people, like you say, that just sit around and drink/take drugs without even bothering to try getting a job. Also, if they can't get a job well help with charity and do something for your local community. I dont want to fund someones drinking.
Would it be a better idea to cut taxes and just buy a bottle a day for someone because that is what we as UK tax paying citezens are doing!
Also, there was a story earlier this year about a family in the UK who had fifteen children I think and got over seventy thousand per year off benefits!!! The parents said they could not work as they wouldnt get as much money as they would off benefits, as they had so many children.
People may disagree, they may love children but do not have them if you cant afford them. It is wrong to have them then expect us to pay for food to feed the people they brought into the world!
Single parents whose kids are ill, or do work as much as possible do deserve benefits and don't get me wrong I do not resent people like that.
Just people who use it and sit around.
I work and I even manage to volunteer to help people. Yet they do nothing.
Also, what a previous answer said is a good idea. People should work for the council etc doing mundane boring jobs. This may encourage some of the wasters to get a proper job!

Well - First things first - cut off child benefit after 1 child (or however many if multiple births)
National service
Compulsory reversible sterilisation from 12..
I know most people here will complain - but is it fair that people who work, should support the lifestyle of people who don't? Most of the pregnancies are due to "mistakes", so being reversibly sterilised should be a good thing.. I think kids should be cherished, not used as a tool to get a house and drugs. If you want children, then you should be able to afford them! (And that includes love - how can you love a child by letting them use drugs at 12?) Besides, The children that grow up in such an environment are going to have an uphill struggle to achieve.

We shouldn't worry too much about there being benefit scroungers, there are more important issues facing Britain.
Just because some people abuse the welfare state, it shouldn't mean that everyone else who through no fault of their own are forced onto benefits should suffer. In any society there will always be scroungers, just as there will be good people who give something back to their community.

As long as the government gives scroungers a free bee they ll take it! I say everyone who is not in work should carry out 10 hours a week community service for their benefit, which will help us all and teach freeloaders to respect the system!

far more revenue is lost to the exchequer in the uk (and in every other developed economy) through tax evasion than ever gets near the 'benefit scroungers'.
we need a better, and more pro-active, irs system to make the people who benefit most from our complex economies pay for the privilege.
if we could get the rich to pay their way properly we would have more than enough money to fund a decent education system, and get kids who left school at sixteen because they were bored stiff with civics lesson settled into high-paid city jobs.

They go to sign on in the job centre !
The job centre has 100's of job vacancies ?
Unless a person has a genuine mental or physical reason not to apply for all vacancies should it not be a condition of the receipt of benefit that all positions are applied for ?

It annoys me to see people who are on benefits who are able to work, but won't get off their backsides.
There is plenty of volunteering work they could do whilst drawing their benefits. This would give them some input to their CV's to show they were not idle when they do apply for a job. I would certainly look at stopping benefits for those who persistant can but won't make a contribution.

well first of all may i say that I am on benefits because I am supposed to have "learning and social difficulties" believe me i would like to work and be independent
people who do not want to work however people who can't be bothered working or who claim benefits because they are just lazy should be jailed for not making an effort towards getting into work and off benefits!
