Self publishing will not usually give you a greater chance at finding a real publisher. Always try a real one first. Self publishing will cost big money, the quality is generally poor, the sale price too high. Even if you get Amazon to accept it, most published books never sell a single copy, other than to people you knw. Sorry, but that's the reality. There are a hundred self-publishing houses out there waiting to take your money. Be sure to check out the Predators and Editors website before you go near any of them.

There are resources, incl Writer's Digest, where you can find lists of publishers specialising in any genre, including poetry. Your library should have a copy.

Best of luck

It is usually better to try to send the book to a regular publisher (not a vanity press, not a press where you pay for the printing). The advantage of having a publishing house is that you: 1) have had someone select and edit your book, 2) you have their money to pay for the printing of the book in sufficient numbers to bring the cost per book down to a profitable amount (and do you really have 5-10,000.00+ to put into printing?), 3) you have their distribution system to get your books out to the readers.

The problem with self-publishing is not getting the book in print, but getting the book into the marketplace. Without an ISBN number almost no bookstore would be willing to carry it.

In addition, most distributors (who stock the bigger stores) won't carry the self-published book. Most of the reviewers (right or wrong) are a bit leary of self-published work. So you are mostly left to sell each book individually while you store your stock and pay taxes on that stock each year (The Thor power tool rule).

If at all possible, look for a publisher. Yes, you will make less on each book you sell, but you will follow the rule that money should flow toward the writer, not away from the writer.

Good luck with your writing career.

YOU CAN PUBLISH YOUR OWN BOOK WITH THE RIGHT CAPITAL. I SUGGEST YOU CONTACT PRINTERS IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES SUCH AS CANADA (IT IS CHEAPER). GO AHEAD AND SUBMIT YOUR WRITINGS TO AS MANY PUBLISHERS AS YOU ARE ABLE TO STAND AND THEN TRY IT ON YOUR OWN. I PUBLISHED A COMIC BOOK IN THE 80'S. iI SENT IT OVWER SEA'S TO BE PRINTED. IT WAS REALLY CHEAP.
