You have to know the meaning of God to question his existence.
God's existence is not supposed to be proved or defended.
I pray to you God - give me the strength to cross the widest rivers and climb the highest mountains, walk through the darkest caves. Give me the wisdom to love all and forgive all wrong doing. Give me the power to bring hapiness to all.
Only God is available to you to read such prayers. And when you believe there is God, you will have gained all that you asked for.
Keep Walking.

There are many great books on this subject that provide lots of facts and data which shows overwhelming evidence that the creation model of origins is accurate. And creation is a great argument for a creator. One good book is: Darwin's Black Box.
I don't know what you consider to be trite. The Bible states that the fool has convinced himself that there is no God. I suppose if you don't choose to believe the Bible, that would be of no help.
On the other hand, if you do believe the Bible, it states: Knock and the door will open, seek and you will find. So, just offer to someone that they sincerely ask God to reveal himself, and leave it up to God. After all, if He cannot convince someone of himself, you sure won't have any success.
I think the best argument I've heard is the following. It's not really a defense, because you can't really defend something for which there is no empirical evidence, and it does not 'prove' that God exists, but it creates a reasonable doubt to those who think that He does NOT exist, and it makes sense to intellectually honest people. Here it is:
Man has explored very little of our universe. More than 99.999999999% of it is still a total mystery to the most brilliant of scientists living today. That means that as a group, all people combined have less than 1% of all universal knowledge. Is it not possible that God exists in the 99 plus percent of universal knowledge that we lack?
Stating that there is no God because we cannot see proof of Him in our known universe is like searching a one inch square area for a particular grain of sand that is lost somewhere in the world and then stating that, based on your search, the grain does not exist.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
SUCCESS!

Wow, that's pretty harsh. You got such a negative attitude I don't know if there would be a way to convince you. But hey, may be a good thing, if there is a way to, I guess this is the best way to get it!! :)
I think it would really take a personaly experience on your part because just 'hearing' about miracles isn't enough, because so many people lie. Most defense you'll probably get is going to be miraculous or supernatural, and that ALSO would take faith to believe. If you just believe that everything's here by chance or coincidence, I don't think anything that you can type into a computer would prove anything. I'm gonna keep my eye on this post for awhile to see what kind of answers you get. :)

there exists a food chain whereby each animal gets its food. there exists a balance in this food chain which is neccessary for survival of every being.
the earth happens to be at such a distance from the sun that its not too hot nor too cold, which ensures the survival of the above said beings.
the ozone layer just so happens to be over earth, thereby protecting the animals from any danger from sun's harmful rays.
look at everythign man. its a setup. its a bloody set up alright. someone/something put all this in place and is watching it all.
i happened to watch this documentary the other day about the crocodile mother laying her eggs in the sand. now the egg can only survive at a small temperature range. the croc mom just so happens to lay the eggs and get the temp right. which scientists themselves do not know how. instinct? cmon man its all a part of the big play.
u can check the authenticity of the croc egs by using google.com, i saw it on bbc by d way.

Let God defend his self if hes able. The only reason humans evolved on this rock is because of opposable thumbs and a cold euro-asian enviroment. To survive the long cold winters the human brain had to develop in the area of planning, and foresight. The humans that branched off to the tropical climes merely continued to procreate, eat, and sleep. Without thumbs man would've had no use for tools. He never would've been able to throw spears, make warm clothes, start a fire etcMonkeys have thumbs also but being indiginous to a tropical region they never needed their brain or thumbs to do much more than pick parasites, fruit, and tree climbing

You can prove it with scientifical arguments. A nice thing said Gheorghe Calciu Dumitreasa an orthodox priest from Romania, who after he was imprisoned by the communists he went to America and never camed back. He said that you can't prove God's existence to someone who doesn't believe in God. Even when you say I believe in God you don't say I know that there is God you just say I believe. I can say that He exists but it has no point to prove it to you. When I was in junior high I had a teacher who tried to show that there is no God and we were made by aliens and these kind of stupid things. Because of that I tried all kind of spiritual exercise with little succes. Later, nearly when I finished highschool ( I was in the eleventh grade ) and I rediscovered my faith I got more signs about His existence that when I did all those spiritual exercise.
You're problem is not if you believe in God but: if you want to find if God exists. There are three kind of people: people who pray a lot and have a life full of God, people who are fighting against the concept of God ( without knowing that they actually want to prove themselves that God exists ) and people who might believe in God or not but they don't really think about these things. God works with the two first kind of people I said. The last one is very hard to work with. So in which group are you?
Read about Seraphim Rose. He was totally against God and became a monk who explained the Church's vision about UFO.
There is another problem. I am an orthodox, from Romania, and I know that if I wouldn't be an Orthodox I could never have the certitude about God I have. Maybe if I would be an catholic, but protestant in no way. I don't want to offend anyone but there are things which an orthodox could show, proving the existence of God like: saints in our days ( in USA - John Maximovici, in Romania - Cleopa Ilie, Ilarion Argatu, Arsenie Boca etc. ), icons who made wounders and other kind of relics.
One another thing. About God's stuffs. Let's take your example: if you need to have a reason to believe in God. The devil tells you that there is no God ( is so obvious ). But people of God tells you diferent. And they can't prove it to you. But if you try to believe them and try to have a christian life sooner or later you will realise that there is God.
May this words help you.
May God bless you!

ok, lets answer your question with a question... Why is the universe life friendly?
God, in the sense i believe, isnt the bible jehovah of garden of eden fame, or whatever, but rather what You make of Him.
oh, by the way, if you read my question on the necronomicom properly, i never said it was real or fake, I just want exerts from it for my own platforms of learning. but if its fake, and just a horror story, why so famous os real?
some things reveal themselves in due time.

To believe in the existence of God, one must take a leap of faith.
It's a pity that so many people don't seem to care about where they land.

...Although I'm not a Christian (I'm a Buddist), I still believe in my religion's god. Now let me ask you: If God did not create the world, who created the world? And why all of a sudden there is this tiny ball of gas and rocks, and it just explode? Why, why ,why....
