I think people created gods etc. because there is a need to have something to justify that which we do not understand. It's like when a little kid asks why the sky is blue. Before we knew the scientific reasons for it, it was easy to say that a god made it that way.

From wikipedia:

Humans have many different methods which attempt to answer fundamental questions about the nature of the universe and our place in it (cosmology). What is reality? How can we know? Who are we? Why we are here? How should we live? What happens after we die? Religion is only one of the methods for trying to answer one or more of these questions. Other methods include science, philosophy, metaphysics, esotericism, mysticism, animism and shamanism. Given the discontes with modernity, many people in the "West' use more than one of these methods, giving rise religious pluralism, as well as to what are know as new religious movements.

It's a vocabulary that helps to explain otherwise inexplicable phenomena. We see things which are not explained by cold science, and we create words and symbols to describe them. It's not so much that "demons" exist, but that something exists for which the name "demon" seems most appropriate.

Is the difference clear enough? The word exists: the phenomenon to which it is attached may not be what Webster's Dictionary says when it defines "demon" or any of the other words you used. So for witchcraft; there are people who call themselves witches, including myself, and our craft is the things that we do as part of our religion. So witchcraft exists, but it's not something against nature, but with it.

Because we know humans cannot possibly be all there is. There is something inside of us all that makes us believe in something, we all worship something, even the atheist.

If one believes in God, one must also believe in Angels, Demons, witchcraft, sorcery, and Satan. It all goes together. Other religions believe the same. There is good and evil in this world regardless of ones religious beliefs.

We as humans have a habit of explaining or reasoning evrything which happens or does not happen. Now as we are not that smart so whatever we can not explain we blame/attribute on something/someone. If something good happens its luck, God, angels or something, if something bad happens its badluck, demons, etc. It's a way of living life, to explain everything in some way so that we dont arrive at a situation where things are left unexplained.

Its also a way to hide our inabilities, when we say things like "Only God can save us now", "it was my badluck that I could not get through this".

These are some of the reasons we choose to belive in things like that.

we want to see more out of life than humans and animals. every human also needs someone divine to worship. it is our natural thinking that there is a higher power controling us. as for witchcraft, demons, etc. they are sometimes part of our religion or we are scared and our imagination takes over. suspicion can also lead to beliefs such as when u see ur neighbor brewing something inside a pot and green smoke comes out. =P
