Because they thought they were connected to the afterlife. I just know that since they were so mysterious and unable to be comanded, they often thought they were somehow connected to the after-world.
I found this online:
Bast- The Egyptian Goddess of the moon, cats, and sexuality, she is depicted as either a cat-headed woman or a cat.

Sorry about all the would-be mullahs, here, but the Egyptians ... at least the Cairenes, are STILL real real fond of cats. Yeah, they respond to the old muezzine's call three, five or seven, you know (depending on how much they hate their work), but they all treat kitties with respect and awe.
The Egyptians started worshipping cats when they started storing grain. Agriculture meant rats, so making friends with cats was a real real smart move, and the Pharoah's chilluns were nobody's fools.
Cairo today is still a "city of cats" and has relatively few rats, given the proximity to the river and the piss-poor sanitation. So it's still a smart idea for them to maintain that friendly relationship with the cats.
See, religion doesn't HAVE to be insane and illogical ... it CAN make sense, at least sometimes.
Bottom line (I promise) - the Egyptians were real practical, and cats were needed.

They did worship cats. Most Egyptians are Muslim or christian now.
Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt, and consequently depicted as a fierce lion. Indeed, her name means (female) devourer.
This gentler characteristic, of goddess of perfumes, together with Lower Egypt's position as the loser in the wars between Upper & Lower Egypt, lead to her ferocity being gradually toned down. Thus by the Middle Kingdom, she had come to be thought of as a domestic cat rather than a lion, although occasionally, she would be depicted holding a lionness mask, hinting at suppressed ferocity

you are Wicca, you supposed to know this. Cats are trapped between our world and the world of the dead. Egyptians worshiped them because they are the guardians of the underworld. they make sure that the souls of those who brought distress and evil (in the old times) stayed in the underworld. they say if you stare into a cats eyes long enough you can get lost in the underworld and it can steal your soul.

No, it's because cats are their guardians of the underworld, and they were in charge of them after death, so they respected them, naturally making them divine.
