Host file is in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\
(then on ETC folder. This is Windows XP specific).

The filename (without extension) is: hosts

You can open it by notepad. There is sample there that you can follow...

Actually, on WinXP and Svr03, the contents of the hosts file are read by the DNS Resolver (client) when it loads — they take precedence over names stored on the DNS server(s).

This leads to another, sneaky, use of the hosts file. You can block access to a DNS name by adding an entry saying its address is 127.0.0.1 (the local loopback address).

The other main use is for troubleshooting.

If your not using a DNS server the computer defaults to the host file. You can manually input the ip address of certain known websites or other computers on the network. It is a fall back internal DNS manipulator.

DNS: Domain Name Server, converts an Ip address to its name equivalent.

ex..

172.168.4.12 = Yahoo.com
